First-of-its-Kind Brain-Computer Interface for Assistive Communication Developed

Cognixion® has developed an innovative assistive reality device, the Cognixion ONE™ Axon, which integrates augmented reality (AR) and a wireless brain-computer interface, creating the first-of-its-kind system.

It combines AI, AR, and Assistive Technology to improve communication and independence for individuals with severe motor impairments.

The Cognixion ONE Axon features a non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) that utilizes electroencephalogram (EEG) technology. This enables patients to communicate their thoughts and mental attention through a wearable, augmented reality headset.

The device includes contextual predictions using large language models like GPT to swiftly assist the user in expressing their communication goals and desired outcomes. It offers recommendations that can be promptly chosen and conveyed audibly and visually through the front visor as a tool for communication aid.

Designed to help patients with advanced disease progression, the Cognixion ONE Axon offers a new way to interact and communicate with the world around them.

It aims to help individuals with neurodegenerative conditions like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Motor Neuron Disease (MND), as well as acquired conditions like traumatic injuries and cerebral palsy that result in severe motor impairments.

Currently, no approved device enables individuals who are completely paralyzed or locked in to communicate once the current standard of eye-tracking care becomes impractical due to ocular motor decline caused by their disease state.

The Cognixion ONE device has the potential to offer individuals who have had difficulty communicating due to their medical conditions a new level of independence and autonomy without requiring extensive training or surgical interventions.
